BJD and BJP gear up in Odisha for panchayat elections

Bhubaneswar, June 28: Major political parties in Odisha have geared up keeping in view the coming panchayat polls, due next year. The state executive of BJP is meeting today to take stock of the organisational strength of the party and improve it, where ever necessary. " We are prepared to display our organizational prowess in the state at any time", said BJP state president Sameer Mohanty. " People of Odisha have been disgusted with the dismal performance of the BJD government in the state", he added. During the last panchayat polls in 2017, BJP had improved its tally and it has also become the recognised opposition in the state assembly after 2019 assembly polls, relegating Congress to third position.  The party in power at the Centre has also geared up keeping the coming assembly polls in five states in view The national party has held a high level meeting at the its headquarters in Delhi recently. On the other hand, the ruling Biju Janata Dal, which is in power for the fifth consecutive term, has gone for the organisational revamp.On Saturday, the ruling party appointed 30 observers for the 30 districts of the state and also six veteran leaders like Prasanna Acharya,  Debi Prasad Mishra, Bikram Keshari Arukh, Maheswar Mohanty, Niranjan Pujari, and Soumya Ranjan Patnaik as senior observers. A day after the party's organisational revamp, BJD president Naveen Patnaik on Sunday appointed advisors, working presidents, zone presidents and senior vice-presidents in its women wing. He appointed five senior women leaders- Jagatsinghpur MP Rajashree Mallick, Bhadrak MP Manjulata Mandal, former Jajpur MP Rita Tarai, party MLAs Latika Pradhan and Nandini Devi -as advisors of the women wing. The revamped team consists of seven zone presidents, nine senior vice-presidents, 27 vice-presidents, 35 general secretaries, 36 secretaries, 28 joint secretaries and presidents of 33 BJD organisational districts. Party insiders said the organizational revamp is also likely in the youth and student wings of the party. The review of the performance of the party government is also likely to be undertaken in near future.
