Bird flu not confirmed in Odisha, nation on high alert

Bhubaneswar, Jan 5: Though the bird flu spreads its tentacles in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and Kerala, no birds have been infected to avian influenza in Odisha, said a senior official on Monday. However, the excreta samples collected from the bird sanctuary in Chilika lake have been sent to the Bhopal laboratory for confirmation of the possible bird flu. The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation said the civic body is ready to handle the possible bird flu menace. With the toll of migratory waterbirds rising to over 1,800, and almost half of them being endangered bar-headed goose visiting the Pong wetlands, the Himachal Pradesh wildlife authorities on Monday suspected avian influenza as the cause, the IANS reported. Similarly, Rajasthan confirmed a bird flu outbreak in the desert state, 140 more crows have died in six districts of state, an official said as reported by the news agency. A high alert has been sounded in Kerala after four bird flu cases were reported in Kottayam and Alappuzha districts, keeping the officials on their toes.The presence of the dreaded virus was confirmed in some ducks following which the State Minister for Forest, Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development K. Raju had ordered culling of 50,000 ducks in both Kottayam and Alappuzha districts, to contain the spread of the infection.Officials also confirmed that as many as 12,000 ducks have died.
