Bhubaneswar. February 19: The impasse in the Assembly over the failure of the government agencies to purchase paddy from the farmers today forced the Speaker to adjourn the proceedings and convene an all-party meeting to resolve the issue. Finally, it was decided that the Food Supplies Minister would make a statement in the House tomorrow. The House witnessed uproar since outset of the today's sitting with the Opposition BJP and Congress members alleging that tons of paddy are lying in the mandis forcing the farmers to sell their produce to the private traders at throw-away prices. The Opposition members were angry over the fact that the Speaker had rejected their demand for discussion of the issue through a special motion. The opposition BJP and Congress members did not allow the House to run, by shouting slogans and causing uproar. Speaker Dr Surjya Narayan Patro first adjourned the proceedings till the end of Question Hour and then till the end of lunch break, in order to restore normalcy in the House. However, the noisy scenes continued during the afternoon session with frequent (at least seven) adjournments in the afternoon. Finally, the Speaker convened an all-party meeting in his office chamber to sort out the issue.
