Ashfaq Ullah Khan Zoological Park oldest lioness Maryam passes away

Gorakhpur, Ap 2: A lioness in the Ashfaq Ullah Khan Zoological Park in Uttar Pradesh's Gorkhpur named Mariam died on Monday, said officials.

Mariam's cremation took place in Ashfaq Ullah Khan Zoological Park.

Yogesh Pratap Singh, a veterinarian at Ashfaq Ullah Khan Zoological Park, expressed, "Lioness Mariam, a resident of Ashfaq Ullah Khan Zoological Park, succumbed to a prolonged illness. Mariam had been ailing for the past month, exhibiting an inability to consume food or water, and had been under the care of the zoo's medical team."

Dr. Singh further stated, "Mariam was relocated to Ashfaq Ullah Khan Zoological Park from Etawah Safari Park on February 28, 2021, along with Lion Pataudi."

"At the time of her arrival in Gorakhpur Zoological Park, Mariam was approximately 15 to 16 years old. The average lifespan of lions in this zoological park ranges from 17 to 18 years, indicating that Mariam had surpassed 17 years of age. Owing to her deteriorating health, we refrained from relocating Mariam to the main enclosure and provided her with attentive care. Unfortunately, her condition deteriorated over the past month, resulting in her cessation of food and water intake," he added.
