Dhenkanal, Sep 15: An accused had fled with a police van from Dhenkanal police station who was later intercepted after a chase operation of around 30 km on Wednesday. Police has arrested the accused, identified as Dharmendra Swain of Hata Baisinga village under Gondia police limit in the afternoon. Sources said, Dharmendra had been picked up by Dhenkanal Sadar Police late on Tuesday night for allegedly roaming in suspicious condition. However, Dharmendra acted like a mentally disabled. Following this, police decided to release him without booking him as per law. At the same time, police was carrying him in the police van for his home, out of compassion. Meanwhile, the police driver got down from the van for attending nature’s call, leaving the vehicle of the key intact. Taking it a chance, Dharmendra started the van and drove away towards Cuttack. Subsequently, PCR van chased after him and intercepted the hijacked van with the offender near Champeswar under Khuntuni police limit in Cuttack in the evening.
