The Ram Mandir dispute is a protracted and intricate matter in Indian history

Lucknow, Jan 22: The Ram Mandir dispute is a protracted and intricate matter in Indian history, revolving around the establishment of a temple dedicated to Lord Ram at the Ayodhya site. Rooted deeply in religious, historical, and political dimensions, it has been a source of tension between Hindu and Muslim communities in India. Here's a concise overview of the key events:

Babri Masjid Construction (1528): The Babri Masjid, believed to have been erected by the Mughal emperor Babur's general Mir Baqi in 1528, was built in Ayodhya. Centuries later, it became a focal point of religious and political disputes.

Ram Lalla Idol (1949): On the night of December 22, 1949, idols of Lord Ram mysteriously appeared inside the Babri Masjid, then functioning as a mosque. This incident heightened tensions between Hindu and Muslim communities, marking the onset of legal disputes over the site.

Rise of Ayodhya Movement (1980s): In the 1980s, the Ayodhya dispute gained prominence with the emergence of the Ayodhya movement, spearheaded by Hindu nationalist organizations and political entities, notably the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP). They contended that the Babri Masjid was built on the birthplace of Lord Ram and advocated for the construction of a Ram temple at the site.

Babri Masjid Demolition (1992): On December 6, 1992, a large gathering of Hindu nationalists, including members of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and its affiliates, assembled at the Babri Masjid site and demolished the mosque. This event triggered communal riots across India, resulting in significant loss of life and property.

Post-Demolition Legal Battles: Following the demolition, numerous legal cases were filed regarding land ownership and criminal charges against those involved in the demolition. The legal battles extended over several years.

Ayodhya Verdict (2019): In November 2019, the Supreme Court of India issued a landmark verdict, assigning the disputed site to Hindus for the construction of a Ram temple and providing an alternative five-acre plot to the Sunni Waqf Board for the construction of a mosque.

Construction of Ram Mandir (2020s): After the Supreme Court verdict, the construction of the Ram Mandir commenced at the disputed site in Ayodhya.
