75-mtre eviction in Puri; Bulldozing of famous Emar Mutt begins

29/08/2019 at 11:33 AM

Bhubaneswar: Eviction drive continued around the Meghanada Pacheri (boundary wall) of the Shreemandir in Puri this morning.

According to the schedule, the “unsafe” 800-year-old Emar Mutt, the 100-year-old Raghunandan Pathagara and many adjoining shops in front of the Singha Dwar (Lion’s Gate) will be demolished today.

The demolition work of the “richest” mutt is currently going on in the presence of Magistrates and about 30 platoons of police force.

According to information, the Emar Mutt was established by Santha (monk) Ramajuja in 11 th Century. While parts of the mutt were earlier declared unsafe by the district administration, structures coming in the 75-metre radius area will be bulldozed.

Valuable books of the Pathagara, which was operating on the first floor of a building of the mutt, have been shifted to a safer place. Shoe stands and sweet shops have also been shifted. Nearly, a half dozen of bulldozers have been engaged in the demolition work, said reports.

Notably, the Emar mutt is culturally and traditionally linked to the Shree Jagannath Temple. The mutt had become a subject of public discussion six years back after 522 silver bricks worth about Rs 90 crore were found in 2011. The mutt used to provide financial support to the Shree Mandir in the past during odd times.

It may be noted that the eviction drive is going on as per the recent decision of the State Cabinet. All structures and constructions, including mutts and private houses and shops, in the 75-metre radius around the Meghanada Pacheri will be demolished for safety and security reasons, according to the decision.

The eviction drive is going on as part of the State Governent’s plan to make Puri a world-class heritage city.
