40 killed, 200 injured as Bangladesh ferry catches fire mid-river

Dhaka, Dec 24: As many as 40 were killed and 200 were injured after a three-story ferry carrying around 500 passengers caught fire mid-river in Bangladesh. According to reports, the fire broke at around 3:00 am in the engine room of the Barguna-bound MV Abhijan-10 launch after it started its journey from Dhaka and was in the middle of Sugandha River. "The authorities recovered the burnt bodies of at least 37 people after a fire broke out on a passenger launch on the Sugandha River in Jhalakathi, 250 kilometeres South of the capital Dhaka,” read a report. Meanwhile, the 200 injured people are being treated in a local hospital out of which 72 people with 2nd and 3rd-degree burns have been hospitalised. The death toll is likely to rise as more passengers have been injured. Rescuers have recovered 37 bodies so far from the charred launch, Jhalakathi Deputy Commissioner Zohor Ali said to the media.
