17-year-old brain dead youth saves two lives donating kidneys in Odisha

Cuttack, March 2: A 17-year-old Odisha youth gave a new lease of life to two persons by donating his kidneys at SCB Medical College and Hospital here.

Om Shibu, a Plus Two final year student of Pattamundai’s Nayakot village in Kendrapara district was suffering from brain tumor and was admitted to the hospital on January 17. Attending doctors declared him brain dead on Thursday.

Shibu had earlier expressed his willingness to donate his kidneys. Respecting his last wish the family members decided to donate his kidneys.

The hospital authorities immediately contacted the State Organ & Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO) following Shibu’s father Ramesh Chandra Das’ consent for donating his kidneys.

One of the two kidneys retrieved from Shibu’s body was transplanted in a 21-year-old girl, Sunita Mohapatra, of Pipili locality in Puri district at SCB Hospital and the second one was sent to a private hospital in Bhubaneswar.

My son was studying well and would have appeared the Plus Two examinations. However, he was diagnosed with brain tumour and the doctors made all attempts to save his life, but in-vain. We respected his last wish and donated kidneys to save the life of two critical CKD patients, said Shibu’s father Ramesh Chandra Das.
