Dhenkanal: Hundreds of women of Balarampur village in Dhenkanal district clashed with police personnel at Jhinkargadi forest protesting cutting of huge number of trees for setting up of a beer factory.
The protesting women who guarded the trees by embracing the trees to prevent them from being cut were forcibly removed by the police personnel resulting in a scuffle.
“We will never allow a single tree being cut. We have saved the forest for decades. It is our life,” said an agitating woman. They appealed to the administration to shift the proposed beer factory to somewhere else.
Meanwhile, a larger number of police personnel were deployed at the site to maintain law and order.
Sources said nearly 500 trees have already been fallen and there is proposal to cut down 10,000 more trees to clear the path for setting up of a beer factory.
A few days ago, these women of Balarampur invoked the famous Chipko movement of the 70s when people embraced the trees to prevent them from being cut, to register their protest.
