Woman sarpanch in Odisha suspended for demolishing PMAY houses

Bhubaneswar, Sep 19: Hemakanti Munda, the female sarpanch of Salebhata panchayat in Agalpara block of Balangir district was today suspended by the Panchayati Raj department. Munda was earlier arrested in August for demolishing several under-construction houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY). Police have also arrested her husband Mohan Munda in this connection. Munda was suspended by the department on the basis of an inquiry report by the Balangir district administration. Munda had ordered demolition of several under-construction houses sanctioned to six tribal families at Gaikhai Chhak near a forest in her panchayat. The houses were subsequently demolished.
