Bolangir: Punjilal Meher, the prime accused in the sensational Patnagarh parcel bomb case that killed newly-wed Soumya Sekhar Sahu and his grandmother, was admitted to Bhima Bhoi Medical College and Hospital here after he was taken ill due to the prolonged hunger strike in the jail.
Meher was shifted to the Bolangir District Jail on February 8 after he was accused of masterminding an alleged escape attempt by at least seven prisoners at the Patnagarh Sub-Jail on January 24.
However, Meher rubbished the allegations saying he was tortured mentally and physically by the authorities at the Patnagarh Sub-Jail. He also claimed that he was on hunger strike from February 7 protesting the injustice.
Notably, Meher was arrested on April 25, last year by the Crime Branch. On January 31, Crime Branch had filed charge sheet against Meher, an English lecturer at Jyoti Vikas College.
It is alleged that Meher had sent the parcel bomb to the house of Sanjukta, the principal of Jyoti Vikash College, to eliminate her and the family members to take revenge as he was not made the principal of the college.
