Water flow into Hirakud reservoir reducing, says minister

Bhubaneswar, Mar 12: The Chhattisgarh government has constructed 2268 projects on the upper catchment of Mahanadi river by the end of 2016 that has reduced flow of water into Hirakud reservoir. Chhattisgarh government has constructed eight large, 29 medium, 1860 minor irrigation projects and 371 anicuts on its side of Mahanadi river, water resources minister Raghunandan Das said this in a written reply to a question from Soumya Ranjan Patnaik on Thursday. The water flow into the reservoir had gone down to around 1,252 million acre foot between 2005-06 and 2015-16 compared to 1.92 million acre feet in 2004-05. Further it reduced to 0.778 million acre feet between 2016-17 and 2018-19. Water inflow into the reservoir was around 0.240 million acre feet in the last five years (2014-15 and 2018-19) between April and June 15.
