Undertrial who escaped from police custody thrice arrested

Nayagarh: Tapan Rout alias Bani, the minor girl rape accused, who had escaped from custody thrice, was arrested again from near his village in Nayagarh district on Tuesday.

According to reports, Tapan was lodged as the Khandapada Sub-Jail as an undertrial prisoner (UTP). He was arrested for allegedly raping a minor girl. He had managed to flee from police custody on the way to the court on August 9 by jumping off the police van.

He escaped from the police custody for third time.

Tapan had first escaped from the Khandapada Sub-Jail on June 10. Later on August 3, he had escaped from the jail by climbing the boundary wall while the officials were busy monitoring cleaning work inside the campus for the visit of District and Sessions Judge. He was later nabbed by police after two days. He again gave police officials the slip and escaped from their custody while he was being taken to produce before a local court on August 9.

Meanwhile, at least seven prison officials, including two jail warders were already put under suspension by Nayagarh Superintendent of Police.
