Bhubaneswar: Odisha is losing crores of rupees due to continuous theft of miner mineral sand from rivers across the State.
This claim of many has been substantiated by videos shot during a sting operation, named Operation Sand, conducted by the noted news channel News7 in Ganjam district. Sand is being illegally transported to neighbouring Andhra Pradesh.
Interestingly, the mafia have adopted different ways of forging transit certificates issued by Tehsil offices. The original dates, stamps and signatures written in ink on ‘Y’ forms are being erased with a mere blaze of a matchstick and changed to new dates, signatures and stamps so that traders can lift sand from riverbeds many times through a single form issued by a Tehsil office.
The theft is allegedly occurring under the very nose of Government officials for which the State is losing crores of revenue, said the news channel.
