Bhubaneswar: A large number of women activists of the BJP Mahila Morcha gheraoed the State Commission for Women (SCW) office and staged a protest demonstration demanding immediate resignation of SCW Chairperson for not conducting an impartial probe into the death of Haridaspur panchayat VLW Smitarani Biswal in Jajpur district.
The protesters led by Morcha president Pravati Parida arrived at the SCW office raising slogans against the SCW Chairperson Minati Behera and also Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.
Smitarani (31) was found death under mysterious circumstances at the guesthouse owned by Haridaspur sarpanch’s husband Rupesh Bhadra on October 16 triggering State-wide public outcry.
Though the protestors tried to forcibly enter the Commissions office, police intercepted them. Few activists were also courted arrest.
The agitating women slammed the SCW Chairperson for submitting a report on the sensitive matter to the Chief Minister without conducting a thorough probe and not visiting spot. They demanded that the Commission make the report which it had submitted to the Chief Minister public. Earlier on Saturday, the BJP workers also gheraoed different police stations in Jajpur district demanding a CBI probe into the incident. Besides, they lodged complaint against Jajpur SP Charan Singh Meena in police stations alleging that he maligned the character of the dead VLW in a press conference. The saffron party too had observed Jajpur bandh to press their demand for a CBI probe to unearth the circumstances leading to the death of Smitarani
