Sit-up row: Special court defers hearing on Patnagarh MLA’s bail to July 5

Bhubaneswar: The Bhubaneswar Special Additional District Judge (ADJ) today deferred the hearing on the bail petition of Patnagarh MLA Saroj Meher to July 5 due to strike of lawyers.

Meher was arrested on June 24 the charge of forcing Public Works Department junior engineer to do sit-ups in public on June 5, the video of which had gone viral on social media.

He was later sent to Jharpada Special Jail.

The MLA fought his own bail plea and presented his side before the Special ADJ. His opponents comprising the Jayakant Sabar, the victim engineer, his wife were also present their side and demand security citing threat to life. 

The ADJ also asked jail authorities to take final call on legislator’s treatment outside the State.

Earlier, Sabar’s wife had lodged a complaint against MLA Meher seeking action against the lawmaker.

Last week, the Orissa High Court (HC) too deferred hearing of an anticipatory bail petition the. The court directed police to submit a case diary in connection with the incident that happened earlier this month.
