Servitor axed for escorting Puri MLA atop Snan Mandap

Puri: The Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) has suspended a servitor of the 12th century shrine for violating rules during Snan Purnima rituals.

Somnath Khuntia was suspended for escorting Puri MLA Jayant Kumar Sarangi for darshan of the Lord Jagannath and His sibling deities on the Snan Mandap (Bathing platform) on June 17 violating guidelines.

As per the rules, entry of devotees and persons other than the authorised servitors on the Snan Mandap is prohibited.

This apart, notice was issued to some servitors and the Puri MLA on the basis of CCTV footage

The suspension order mentions that the conduct of Somanath being serious in nature and, hence, disciplinary action has been contemplated against him under Section 21 of Shree Jagannath Temple-Act 1955.

He also debarred from performing any Seva (services) in the Temple during the period of the suspension.
