Sambalpur MLA requests Naveen to consider shutdown dates for ‘Nuakhai’

Sambalpur, Aug 7: Sambalpur MLA Jaya Narayan Mishra has requested Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik to consider the shutdown dates on the occasion of ‘Nuakhai’.

In a letter to the CM, Mishra wrote, “On behalf of the people of Sambalpur, Rengali and entire Western Odisha we are here to request you that “Nua Khai” is our traditional agricultural festival and is being observed by the people of “Paschim Odisha”, unfortunately, the shutdown dates which is being called by the district administration for Covid-19 pandemic is coinciding with festival date, i.e. August 22 and 23”.

“Since the festival has emotional and traditional values for the people of Western Odisha whoever is away from a home returns to their native place and purchase needful things for this occasion,” he added.

Nuakhai is an agricultural festival observed by the people of Western Odisha. Nuakhai is observed to welcome the new rice of the season. According to the calendar it is observed on panchami tithi of the lunar fortnight of the month of Bhadrapada or Bhadraba, the day after the Ganesh Chaturthi festival.
