Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Council of Medical Registration has issued notice to former Director of Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR), Burla Ashwini Pujahari, to depose before its Ethics Committee in connection with pouring salt on a man’s body after surgical incision.

He has been asked to appear before the Ethics Committee on September 6 at 4 pm, failing which action deemed proper may be decided by the committee, the letter issued by the Odisha Council of Medical Registration Registrar stated.

In December last year, a video had gone viral showing Pujahari’s team using salt on a cancer-affected patient during surgery which was dubbed salt therapy by many.

Earlier, the State Government had also conducted an inquiry and also sent him on leave for the alleged unethical surgery. Later, he resigned from the post.

Following his resignation, he joined the Congress and unsuccessfully contested from the Sambalpur Assembly segment in the recently concluded elections.

A Master of Surgery degree holder, Dr Pujahari had joined the premier institute, a unitary university, as its Director in June 2017.

Days after joining, he had earned good name from the civil society by cracking down on private practice of the doctors during duty hours by frequent surprise checks.
