Puri: After hours of delay, rituals began at Jagannath Temple here today.
Notably, hundreds of devotees at the 12th-century shrine had to go back disappointed on Friday after waiting for hours as priests refused to open the gates following a scuffle between them and police.
The temple in Puri plunged into crisis after a police official allegedly thrashed a priest on Thursday evening.
Servitors, aggrieved over alleged misconduct of a cop on Thursday evening, neither opened the sanctum sanctorum, nor performed rituals of deities. Deities have been forced to remain hungry till this evening.
Tension erupted when temple priest Bhawani Shankar Mohapatra was trying to take three devotees inside the temple on Thursday evening when police at the Lion’s Gate stopped them as they suspected they were not Hindus. Only Hindus can enter the temple.
However, Mohapatra insisted they were Bengalis. When police stopped them a scuffle erupted.
Following the incident, both Mohapatra and police lodged two separate FIRs at the Singhadwara police station.
