Bhubaneswar, Mar 19: The restaurant and hotel business is struggling under the devastating effects of the coronavirus outbreak in Bhubaneswar. The immediate impact was already apparent as people began avoiding public places after one person was diagnosed COVID-19 positive on Monday in the state capital. Restaurant reservations and walk-ins were down 65 to 75 percent on Wednesday from usual business of Wednesday every week. Similarly, hotel occupancy has fallen 2 to 3 percent. And the situation is likely to worsen as the state government has imposed strict restrictions on public gathering of people to avoid coronavirus infection. Dance performances in all bars and clubs have been banned in Bhubaneswar from Tuesday. As a result, restaurants have started giving paid leave to employees. While menus of prominent restaurants have been shortened to half a page, most of these are running by 30 percent staff only. Walk-ins have reduced over 50 percent after the positive case of coronavirus was reported in Bhubaneswar, said Pintu Ghosh, manager, Chai Break Patia outlet.
