Surgeons at the Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital, faculty of medicine of the SOA Deemed to be University here, have successfully conducted a rare surgery on a 39-year-old woman suffering from carcinoid tumour in her left lung.
She had been to several medical centres seeking treatment after being detected with the condition and finally sought help at SUM Hospital recently.
The low-grade tumour, occupying half of her left lung, required delicate surgical intervention. The surgeons decided to perform pneumonectomy on her which meant removal of the entire lung.
According to Dr. Sunil Agrawala, Surgical Oncologist, who headed the team that performed the surgery, the patient was doing fine after the operation. Such critical and rare surgeries are being done in SUM Hospital successfully, he said adding cancer patients from Odisha should take advantage of the facilities available here.
The team comprised Dr. Amitav Jena, Dr. Pradyumna Sahu, Dr. Sourav Mishra, anaesthesiologist Dr. Sreeharsh Satpathy and Dr. Sudip. Dr. Rajesh Lenka, Dr. S.N.Mohanty and Mr. Debi Mohanty provided the back-up support.
