Rare cadaveric kidney transplant conducted at SCB Hospital

Cuttack, Feb 4: A team of SCB Medical College and Hospital (SCBMCH) doctors conducted a rare kidney transplant on Tuesday replacing kidneys of a deceased woman. The team successfully conducted the first cadaveric kidney transplant in the state following a three-hour long surgery. According to SCB Hospital source, the donor Priyanka Patra of Digapahandi area in Ganjam district was undergoing treatment at the Apollo Hospital in Bhubaneswar after she met with a road accident. She was declared brain dead on Monday night by the attending doctors. The victim’s family members urged to donate her organs after her death. The Apollo Hospital authorities informed the SCB Hospital authorities regarding consent of the deceased’s family members to donate Priyanka’s organs. A team of doctors from SCB Hospital arrived at the Apollo Hospital and removed the kidneys of the deceased. A team of five doctors headed by Dr Datteswar Hota of the Urology Department began the surgery at 5.15 am today and successfully conducted the transplant on a patient, Khirod Sahoo (31). Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik took to twitter and congratulated family members of the deceased for donating organs of Priyanka for a noble cause.
