Bhubaneswar: Pranay Sahu, who deserted the Congress on Monday, today joined the ruling BJD in the presence of party president and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik here.
Sahu was inducted into the party fold by Patnaik at the latter residence Naveen Niwas. Sahu had unsuccessfully contested Bijepur assembly by poll in February last year. The development assumed significance in view of the upcoming crucial elections.
Sahu was the fifth key Congress leader either to quit the party or expelled in the last one week. Jharsuguda MLA Naba Kishore Das resigned the grand old party on January 16. On January 18, Sundargarh MLA Jogesh Singh resigned from the party’s primary membership a day after he was suspended for alleged anti-party activities. On January 19, the party expelled former Koraput MLA Krishna Chandra Sagaria and former Union Minister Srikant Jena for alleged anti-party activities.
In October last year, former Koraput MLA Krishna Chandra Sagaria had also resigned as MLA for “failing to provide justice” to a young Dalit rape victim in Kunduli who eventually committed suicide and also protesting against the State leadership.
