Bhubaneswar: The State Government today directed the district Collectors and Municipal authorities to initiate stringent legal action against the violators of the banned plastic and polythene bag/pouch items from Thursday.
Forests and Environment department issued the order as the deadline of month-long mass awareness programme about the ban of polythene ended today.
Forests and Environment Director-cum-Special Secretary K Murugesan said that letters have been to all Urban Development Department, all executive officers of municipalities and commissioners of all municipal corporations to take immediate action against the violation for stocking banned plastic bag/polythene as per the Municipal Law.
While the fine for small offence varies from municipality to municipality as per their respective by-laws, but those who will commit big offence like having heavy stocks will be punished as per the Environment Protection Law. Under the new law, violators will undergo five years jail term, besides paying Rs 1 lakh penalty.
Restriction has been imposed on use of polythene bags, thermocol and similar plastic products in six cities – Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Berhampur, Rourkela, Sambalpur and Puri, in the first phase.
