Bhubaneswar: Hours after Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) president Niranjan Patnaik owned moral responsibility for the party’s humiliating defeat in the 2019 Lok Sabha and Assembly elections and offered to resign from the post, party’s Campaign Committee Chairman Bhakta Charan Das also announced his resignation from the post today.
In his letter the Congress veteran leader said, “On the event of the failure of the election in Odisha, I being the responsible leader of the Party and Chairman of Campaign Committee could not campaign in the State. We failed to perform better in the state, and I also feel equally responsible for the failure of the party.”
Congress won only nine Assembly seats. In 2014, the Congress had won 16 seats in 147-seat Assembly. The Congress had fielded candidates in 140 seats. The party won Koraput Lok Sabha seat only in the 21 parliamentary constituencies. Congress had failed to win a single Lok Sabha seat in Odisha in 2014.
