Bhubaneswar: Three major political parties, BJD, Congress and BJP, and various social organisations are celebrating the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi in different ways in the State on Tuesday.
While the political parties have planned Padyatras, social organisations have staged protests demanding complete stop in sale of liquor across the State after garlanding the Gandhi statue.
According its programmes, the BJD will begin a huge Padayatra from Ekamara constituency to demand inclusion of the ward ‘Ahimsa’ in the Preamble of the Constitution. The ruling party would collect 1 lakh signatures in support of its demand send the same to the Union Government and the President of India.
The BJP will launch ‘Gandhi Sankalpa Yatra’ today. Senior party leader and Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan will inaugurate a Padyatra at Gandhi Smruti Pitha, Telengapitha in Cuttack district.
The Congress has already begun a Padyatra from the Gandhi Park here. The party will continue the Padyatra till October 14. It has planned a host of programmes, including seminars, health check up camps, to celebrate the Gandhi Jayanti.
The Samajwadi Party led by its State president Rabi Behera staged a protest meeting demanding complete prohibition in the State.
Similarly, social organisations like Nisha Nivaran Manch and Durniti Nivaran Manch have staged protests demanding total prohibition and stopping of corruption in the State.
