Bhubaneswar: The BJP’s women’s wing today marched towards the Secretariat here and scuffled with security personnel protesting the recent acquittal of the accused in the Pipili gang rape and murder case.
BJP Mahila Morcha workers were demanding handing over the case to the CBI as they alleged that the state Crime Branch failed to deliver justice to the rape and murder victim resulting in the acquittal of the accused.
The protestors led by party Rajya Sabha member Roopa Ganguly state-level leaders and carried red bangles during their march to the Secretariat and wanted to gift those to Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik for his alleged silence over the issue.
A scuffle ensued between the protestors and cops. The police detained several Mahila Morcha activists.
On December 24, prime accused Prashant Pradhan and his brother Sukanta, allegedly involved in the sensational gang-rape and murder of a 19-year-old girl at Pipili in Puri district were acquitted by the First Additional Sessions Court.
A 19-year-old woman was found unconscious and semi-naked in a paddy field at Pipili in Puri district on November 28, 2011. She succumbed after remaining semi -comatose in SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack on June 21, 2012.
Earlier on several occasions, BJP Mahila Morcha activists demonstrated near Crime Branch Headquarters in Cuttack and also in the State capital demanding justice for Pipili gang rape and murder victim and alleging that the Crime Branch has intentionally failed to give justice to victim.
