Pipili gangrape case: Court acquits two accused siblings due to lack of evidence

Bhubaneswar: The Bhubaneswar Additional District Judge today acquitted two accused brothers in the sensational Pipili gangrape case due to lack of evidence.

The court acquitted Sukant Pradhan and Prashant Pradhan due to lack of evidence.

Though the girl was allegedly raped by four persons on November 28, 2011, police registered an FIR on January 9, 2012 after the State Human Rights Commission intervened.

Notably, gang rape of a girl student in Arjungoda village on November 29 in 2011 in Pipili area of Puri district had led to a severe public outcry across the State. The victim was under the treatment at the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack in a critical condition after she was allegedly subjected to rape and then attempts of murder through strangulation. She died on June 21, 2012 after battling for life for more than five months.

In a bid to the pacify the public on January 13, 2012, the State Government constituted a Commission of Inquiry in the matter with retired Orissa High Court judge Justice Pradyumna Kumar Mohanty as its chairman. The Commission submitted its report in 2016.
