Bhubaneswar: Rubbing salt into wounds, Panchayati Raj Minister Pradeep Maharathy today hailed Monday’s acquittal of two accused brothers in 2011 sensational Pipili ‘gang-rape-murder’ of a 19-year-old girl.
Maharathy had stepped down as a Minister following allegations that he shielded the accused then.
Notably, a prime accused and his brother – Prashant Pradhan and Sukant Pradhan, allegedly involved in sensational gang-rape and murder of the girl in Pipili of Puri district in 2011-12, were acquitted by First Additional Sessions Court for want of evidence.
The 19-year-old girl was found unconscious and semi-naked in a paddy field in her village on November 28, 2011. She had died on June 21, 2012 after remaining semi-comatose at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack. The incident triggered massive public outrage across the State.
Pradeep Maharathy, who was then the Agriculture Minister, had to step down following allegations that he had tried to shield the accused persons.
Today Mohanty said that truth prevails as the court acquitted Prashant Pradhan and Sukant Pradhan due to lack of evidence.
“My sympathies are with the victim. But truth has prevailed finally,” said Maharathy.
