Phulbani, Ap 18: In a tragic incident, an undertrial prisoner died while undergoing treatment at the Kandhamal District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) on Wednesday.
The deceased has been identified as Abhiram Dagyal of Phiringia area of the district.
Sources said, Abhiram had surrendered himself to the police following the issuance of a non-bailable warrant against him in connection to a ganja smuggling case. Subsequently, he was remanded to Phulbani Jail as an undertrial prisoner.
During his time in custody, Abhiram's health deteriorated and was shifted to the hospital where he tragically succumbed to his illness yesterday.
Family members of Abhiram have alleged that his health was in good condition prior to his detention, but deteriorated significantly due to alleged mistreatment and physical abuse and torture by the police.
