Bhubaneswar, Oct 22: The Odisha government today set up an annual award in the honour of veteran vocalist Sunanda Patnaik for her contribution to the classical music. The Odisha Sangeet Natak Akademi will confer ‘Sunanda Samman’ every year to personalities who excel in classical music.
The ‘Sunanda Samman’ award will carry a cash prize of Rs 2.5 lakh and a citation.
Born on November 7, 1934, Sunanda, daughter of legendary Odia poet Baikunthanath Patnaik, had started her singing career at All India Radio at the age of 14. She was honoured with many awards including Odisha Sangeet Natak Academy awards twice in 1970 and 1971.
