Odisha govt plans to set up 7 new medical colleges while 3,550 doctor posts lying vacant

Bhubaneswar, Feb 25: Efforts are on to set up seven new government medical college and hospitals in the state this year. The new medical colleges would be established at Puri, Phulbani, Jajpur, Talcher, Sundargarh, Keonjhar and Bhawanipatna, Minister of Health and Family Welfare Naba Kishore Das said in the Assembly on Monday. Now, seven government and four private medical college and hospitals are functioning in the state. The total sanctioned post of doctors at various hospitals in the state is 8720. While 5414 doctors have been appointed, 3306 posts are lying vacant. Similarly, total sanctioned post of doctors at government medical colleges is 1267. While 1023 doctors have been appointed, 244 posts are lying vacant. Similarly, the ratio of doctor population per 1000 population stands at 0.51 percent against 0.86 of national average according to National Health Profile (NHP) 2019. The number of registered doctors is 22,521 in the state while total population of the state is 4.37 crore.
