Odisha: Farmer dies after elephant threw him in air

Sanakhemundi, Jan 21: A man died after a wild elephant threw him in the air with its trunk in Ganjam district, said a forest official on Tuesday. The incident took place at Digapahandi village last night. According to police, two farmers of the area, identified as Alu Lacheya and K Arakhita Patra, were watching the harvested paddy in the fields. Both woke up at around 3 pm hearing a noise and encountered a herd of elephants. A wild elephant griped Lacheya with its trunk and threw in the air when Patra managed to escape. Family members rushed to the spot being informed about the incident and admitted him to the local hospital, but he was declared dead by the attending doctor. Digapahandi police reached there and forwarded the body for post-mortem. A herd of elephants from Changudi Reserve Forest has strayed into human habitats in the area creating panic among the villagers for the last four days.
