Odisha Disaster Preparedness Day observed: chief minister underscores need for developing disaster resilience

Bhubaneswar, 29/10: Chief minister Naveen Patnaik today underscored the need for developing resilence to achieve substantial reduction in economic loss. {"id":19672} Addressing the state level function to mark Odisha Disaster Preparedness Day and National Day for Disaster Reduction at Rabindra Mandap here today, Naveen said state had been devastated by a super cyclone just twenty years ago and it had learnt how to be prepared to face natural disasters. The state was pioneer in developing an effective disaster management policy and has earned appreciation from all quarters including the United Nation organization. This year the state faced another fierce cyclone Fani. The disaster was sucessfully managed due to the collective team effort by the alert state administration. He congratulated all the agencies and individuals for thw robust rescue and rehabilitaion measures. {"id":19673} The climate change poses newer challenges in the form of new natural disasters and therefore, there is a need for building resilience at all levels, he empahsized. {"id":19674} State's chief secretary Asit Tripathy said the state is now fully prepared to face natural calamities.The most important aspect is the restoration of infrastructure. Electricty supply was fully restored within a month following the Fani cyclone that struck the state in May this year, kudos to all the agencies. Chief minister was monitoring the restoration work twice a day. The Centre was building 3 lakh cycone resilient pucca houses in Khurda and Puri districts on the request of the chief minister. The community has become aware of the challenges. {"id":19675} The chief minister has directed to make the state drought-resilent. We have to create irrigation potential for an additional 10 lakh hectare agricultural land, which is a big challenge. We also need to wean the people away from the traditional paddy cultivation, which is fully dependent on the rainfall, said the chief secretary. {"id":19676} Keeping the climate change in mind, we have to be prepared for newer disasters like landslide and urban flooding, he said. Presiding over the function, state revenue and disaster management minister Sudam Marandi administered the pledge to the gathering to be better prepared to face disasters. Chief minister felicitated Director General of Indian Meteorology Department, Dr Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, a weather man from Odisha who had accuratedly predicted about the cyclone Fani. People from various walks life, who had successfully rescued the distressed people during Fani were also felicitated by the chief minister, who also inaugurated an exhibition on disastr preparedness, organized on the occasion.
