Bhubaneswar: The Odisha unit of Congress on Monday claimed to have finalised names of at least 44 candidates in the first phase for the 2019 elections.
Election for the Odisha Assembly is also scheduled to be held together with the Lok Sabha polls next year.
Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) president Niranjan Patnaik on June 23 had announced that there will be an early announcement of its nominees for the ensuing assembly elections slated for next year the first phase names of at least 50 candidates will be announced by August this year.
However, Patnaik today claimed that the Pradesh Election Committee has finalised at least 44 nominees for the ensuing polls.
“The Pradesh Election Committee (PEC) finalised at least 44 candidates for the Assembly elections. The candidates have been selected on the basis of winnability factor,” said Patnaik after the meeting of the PEC.
A meeting of the PEC was held at the Congress Bhavan here today for finalising the candidates where party State in-charge Jitendra Singh, senior leader Narasingah Mishra, OPCC chief Niranjan Patnaik attended.
But Patnaik did not divulge the exact date of publication of names.
As per the policy of the party, the list of selected candidates will be scrutinised by the screening committee of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) before formal announcement
The PEC had earlier decided that more than one ticket will not be given to a family except established leaders.
