Odisha Assembly adjourned 16 times, no business today

Bhubaneswar, Feb 24: No business could be taken up in the Assembly on Monday as the House witnessed as many as 16 adjournments over the issue relating to delay in paddy procurement. Opposition BJP and Congress members continued ruckus in the House the entire day over alleged delay in procurement of paddy by various government-run ‘mandis’ (purchase centres) in the state, forcing Speaker Dr Surjya Narayan Patro to adjourn the proceedings for 16 times and finally, for the day. As soon as the House assembled for the Question Hour, the BJP members rushed to the well of the House followed by their Congress counterparts to know the reason of rejection of the adjournment notice for discussion on irregularities in paddy procurement. The opposition members refused to return to their seats despite Speaker's request. The Speaker then convened an all-party meeting to break the stalemate that ended inclusive as the Food and Civil Supplies Minister Ranendra Pratap Swain refused to accept the Opposition demand.
