Bhubaneswar: Gujarat-cadre Odia IAS officer Girish Chandra Murmu has been appointed as the first Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir.
Murmu, a 1985-batch IAS officer currently holds the post of Expenditure Secretary in the Finance Ministry. He hails from Mayurbhanj district.
He was Principal Secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his tenure as Chief Minister of Gujarat. He is considered to be a close confidante of the Prime Minister.
On August 5, the Modi Government abrogated provisions of Article 370 that granted a special status to Jammu and Kashmir and made it a union territory.
Meanwhile, incumbent J&K Governor Satya Pal Malik has been appointed as the Governor of Goa where Mridula Sinha is serving.
