New Delhi, 18/12:  The review petition of Akshay Kr Singh, one of the convicts in the 2012 Delhi gang rape case popularly known as Nirbhaya case, was rejected and  his death sentence was confirmed by the apex court today. A three-judge bench of the Supreme Court, headed by Justice R Banumathi and also comprising Justices Ashok Bhushan and AS Bopanna heard the review petition and delivered the judgement. Meanwhile, victim Nirbhaya's mother welcomed the Supreme Court's judgement and said the convicts should be hanged at the earliest without any further delay. On the other hand, Akshay's lawyer said he would file corrective petition in the apex court and also mercy petition before the President of India. The  gang rape of  a 23-year-old paramedic student on a moving bus in south Delhi on December 16, 2012, had created a nation-wide uproar . She was dumped on a road, naked and critically injured. Later, she died on December 29 in Singapore. Of the six accused in the Nirbhaya rape and murder case, four were convicted by the court.  Earlier, the review petitions of the three other convicts-Mukesh, Pawan Gupta, and Vinay Sharma- had been dismissed. However, the review petition of the other convict Akshay Ks Singh was pending in the court.  Dr AP Singh, Akshay's lawyer, argued that the conviction was made against his client under media pressure, public pressure & political pressure etc. On the other hand, contesting the convict's petition, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said, "The convict does not deserve any lenience. God would feel ashamed of creating such a monster."
