Balasore, 11/10: It is told that law is blind. This was evident in Godhibasa slum of Balasore town. A woman is unable to get back her three month-old baby boy due to “lack of evidence”. {"id":19117} The baby was recovered by the police four days after his theft. But alas!, the Child Welfare Committee is unable to hand the baby over to his mother as she lacks proof that he is her child. {"id":19119} October 3 night. The residents of Godhibasa slum were forced to move out of the slum due to waterlogging following heavy rain. They took shelter at Platform No 1 of Balasore railway station. Among them was Sita Marandi of Chandaneswar area. She was asleep at the platform along with her husband and four children including the baby. Taking the opportunity that they were deep asleep, somebody stole away the baby. Sita searched for her baby at the wee hours when she awoke. But they did not find the baby. Later, they filed  a missing report at the Government Railway police station. {"id":19120} Basing upon the complaint, the police searched for the missing baby and rounded up Pandia Murmu of Sobharampur. Later the police brought Jogi Patra of Balia area and his wife for interrogation. After they confessed to have sold it outside, police recovered him from Jaleswar. {"id":19121} However, the police could not hand over the stolen baby to his mother as  she failed to produce any proof about the parentage of the baby. {"id":19122} Child Welfare Committee chairman Bhagirathi Barik said the baby would be returned to his mother after production of evidence. Now it has been the routine duty of the hapless mother to run to the collector’s office every day to get back her baby. But in vain! {"id":19123} On the other hand, the Government Railway Police has arrested three persons and forwarded them to the court. Efforts are on to nab the prime accused.
