Khordha, Feb 22: A 42-year-old man was trampled to death by a wild elephant at Samantraypur village under Tangi forest division in the district, police said on Saturday. Bitra Rout was attacked by the pachyderm last evening when he was returning back home from market. Family members searched for Rout as he did not return home last night and after a frantic search his body was found lying in the nearby forest this morning. The elephant had entered into human settlement from the nearby jungle in search of food, said a forest official. The victim’s family will get Rs four lakh as compensation from the state government. Of that, the first instalment of Rs 40,000 will be given to the family members for performing Rout’s last rites, said the official.
