Bhubaneswar: A man reportedly died in Hiranpada area in Krushna Prasad block in Puri district after a coconut tree fell on him today due to the heavy wind caused by cyclone Fani.
The deceased is yet to be identified.
Puri is witnessing maximum wind speed of 142 kmph gusting to 174 kmph as the extremely cyclonic storm made landfall in the Puri coast. The current wind speed of the cyclone is 175-185 kmph gusting to 195 kmph.
The landfall process of cyclonic storm Fani which started at 8.18 in the coastal areas with Puri recording wind speed of 175 kmph, will take another few hours for completion.
Meanwhile, highest 15 cm rainfall was reported in Gopalpur followed by Puri-10 cm, Bhubaneshwar-5 cm, Paradeep, Chandbali, Balasore- three cm each.
Meanwhile, about a million people have been evacuated in the last 24 hours from vulnerable districts, including three lakh people in Ganjam and 1.3 lakh in Puri district. About 5000 kitchens started operating to serve people in the shelters in different parts of the State.
