Man arrested in Odisha for spreading rumours on coronavirus

Rayagada, March 13: A 32-year-old was today arrested for allegedly spreading rumours on Facebook about a person being tested positive for deadly coronavirus. The development emerged after ‘COVID-19 Odisha Regulations, 2020’ which was approved by the State Cabinet today. Police said that the accused identified as Satyanarayan Samal, a resident of  Ambadola in Rayagada district has posted a message on his timeline on Friday morning claiming that a daily wager recently returning from Kerala has been tested positive for coronavirus. Subsequently the district police launched an investigation and visited several hospitals in the district to identify the suspect. However, police later found that the post was a hoax. Police said that the accused who is a teacher by profession has been arrested under section 153A, 504, 505(1)(b) and 507 of Indian Penal Code(IPC). Earlier the State government has also warned of stringent action against rumour mongers under the regulation.
