Love affairs took 242 lives in Odisha in 2018, reports NCRB

Bhubaneswar, Jan 10: The recent National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data states that 242 persons committed suicide in Odisha over love affairs in 2018.   Odisha has registered 4,592 suicide cases including suicide of 501 students ( 238 male and 263 female ) and 363 daily workers ( 275 male and 88 female ) in 2018 due to various reasons stated the latest record of the NCRB. However, no farmers had committed suicide during this period, the NCRB informed. Farmer suicide has been a major political issue in the state with the Opposition parties claiming that more than a hundred farmers had ended their lives over the crop-related issues. However, the BJD government in the state had denied saying that not a single farmer had committed suicide over the issues of crop failure and debt burden. While 242 persons took the extreme step due to love related issues, 230 persons for marital problems, the report mentioned. Average 10.5 persons committed suicide in one lakh population in the state which is 0.4 percent higher than the national average (10.1 percent). Similarly, highest number of housewives (1.470) have committed suicide.  As many as 894 self-employed persons took their lives in the aforementioned year which stands second. The total number also includes 331 employees and 280 unemployed. This apart, 1,460 persons ended their life following family feud.
