Four feared dead in Talcher coal mine accident

Talcher: At least four persons were feared dead after MCL’s coal mine caved in at Bharatpur in Talcher in Angul district, late on Tuesday night.

At least nine miners also suffered critical injury in the accident.

Tonnes of coal have come crashing down in Bharatpur Colliery (Talcher), owned by owned by Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd (MCL), a public sector undertaking (PSU) at around 11 pm on Tuesday.

Sources said the landslide was triggered by a controlled explosion at the site. Meanwhile, authorities stopped production in the mine.

The search and rescue operation is still on.

Union Petroleum and Natural Gas and Steel Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, who hails from Odisha, expressed grief over the incident.

“Pained by the loss of life in the unfortunate mine accident at Bharatpur OCP located in Talcher Coalfield, Odisha. I am in close touch with the Coal Ministry .Rescue and relief efforts are on and all possible help is being extended. Pray for the early recovery of those injured,” the Union Minister tweeted.
