Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Forest Department has filed an FIR at the Keonjhar police station against the driver of a goods train which had hit a female elephant, leading to her death at Ramachandrapur under the Keonjhar Sadar forest range yesterday.
According to reports, the Forest Department held the Railways responsible for death of the elephant as the driver had not slowed down the train in the area, identified as an elephant corridor.
“The Forest Department gives report regarding elephant movement to the Khordha Railway Division twice a day. On the day of incident, the department had also submitted a report at 6.20 pm informing that a herd of seven elephants were moving near the railway line. Dragging of the elephant body to 50 to 60 metre clearly shows that the driver had not slowed down the train,” said a forest official.
Nadiya Chand Kanungo, a wildlife expert, said the Railways should be held responsible if the driver had not slowed down the train. “It is complete administrative failure that led to death of an elephant. Errant should be dragged to jail soon so that such incidents would be lessened in coming days,” he said.
