Bhubaneswar: The death toll in the Kendrapara boat mishap increased to nine with bodies of eight of nine missing persons retrieved from the Mahanadi river mouth near Nipania by this morning.
The deceased included seven children and two women and one person is still missing. The deceased were identified as Prabhati Swain, Pallabi Swain, Debasmita Pani, Dhuna Sahoo, Rosalini Sahoo, Ishani Dalai, Sai Tarai, Anu Tarai and Debashis Sahoo.
According to information, as many as 50 persons belonging to Paradip Hasina area were ferrying in the ill-fated boat when it capsized in the Mahanadi confluence near Nipania in Kendrapara district yesterday.
All bodies recovered from the river would be sent to Kujanga hospital for post-mortem, said reports.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Naveen Patanik has expressed deep grief over the deaths and announced ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh for family of each deceased and free treatment for the injured.
