Cuttack: A day after a Sub-Inspector (SI) of police was suspended for allegedly delaying the arrest of a rape accused resulting in the suicide of the victim, interim DGP Satyajit Mohanty on Monday placed Jharpokharia police station IIC Sarat Kumar Mahalik under suspension.
Mahalik was put under suspension for gross negligence and dereliction of duty in monitoring the case thereby tarnishing the image of the State police force, said an official release.
“DGP Odisha has placed Inspector Sarat Chandra Mahalik, Ex-IIC Jharpokharia PS in Mayurbhanj district under suspension for gross negligence and dereliction of duty in monitoring of Jharpokharia P.S Case No. 125 Dtd. 30.10.2019 U/s 376 / 505 IPC. The case relates to suicide of lady lecturer of Rairangpur College which has tarnished the image of Odisha Police,” noted a communiqué issued by the State police headquarters.
On Sunday morning, Rukmuni Mandal, a woman lecturer of the Rairangpur College was found hanging in her hostel room after reportedly being upset over police inaction against a youth against whom she had levelled rape allegation in October.
As per reports, Rukumni had lodged an FIR at Jharpokhia police station on October 30 alleging that a distant relative had raped her on October 27 while she had visited Keonjhar for some work.
Though police registered the case but did not arrest the accused. On Saturday night her body was found hanging.
On the other hand, police arrested the accused from Cuttack after the suicide of the lady lecturer broke. And in a damage control mode, the DGP also transferred Jharpokhia police station IIC Sarat Kumar Mahalik and suspended SI Prashant Swain for dereliction in duty.
