Bhubaneswar: A day after the opposition stalled the Assembly over alleged rape and suicide of a dalit girl in Jagatsinghpur, the State Government today said that the girl committed suicide out of shame after a youth of the same village who was in a one-sided affair with her, circulated her objectionable pictures.

Making a statement in the Assembly as directed by Speaker Surjya Narayan Patro on Monday, MoS Home Dibyashankar Mishra said the accused youth Deepak Behura was arrested two days after the girl’s death and the case is being investigated by Jagatsinghpur SDPO now under the supervision of district Additional SP.

Quoting media reports, Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Narasingha Mishra had raised the issue in the Zero Hour on Monday saying the girl was raped in front of her parents, who were also assaulted by the accused.

“Sukali Das, wife of Hatakishore Das belonging to Scheduled Caste of Tentoi village under Naugaon police station of Jagatsinghpur district alleged that around 6 am on November 7, she found her daughter’s room locked from inside. After breaking open the door and entering the room, she found her daughter Laxmipriya Das, aged about 24 years, had committed suicide by hanging herself,” said the Minister.

Since prima facie evidence was established against Behura who belongs to SEBC, he was arrested on November 9 and forwarded to the judicial custody.
